Overview

Brand reputation in PC building is mostly folklore passed around in comment threads. This tool tries to measure it: pull posts and comments from r/pcbuilds, find every brand mention, and score the sentiment of the text around it.

Brands live in a JSON file rather than in code, keyed by component category, each with a list of aliases — so Ryzen and i7 resolve to their makers, and RTX and Radeon to theirs. That file is the thing you edit to change what gets tracked, which keeps the matcher itself simple.

Sentiment comes from VADER, which is a good fit here because it was tuned on social text and handles the things Reddit comments are full of: negation, intensifiers, punctuation and slang. Scores are classified against the standard ±0.05 compound-score cutoffs and then aggregated per brand into a mention count and an average.

The scraper is deliberately polite — a configurable delay between API calls, defaulting to two seconds, and credentials and limits all read from environment variables rather than hardcoded.
